Hi
I'm a new member and having trouble trying to find out which engines were for which cars.
Although I have 2 Alpines ( both are being restored ), I need to get replacement parts for both.
LGO QMAH 53606506 is in my MK5 Series V and running.
LHI 1270064 OQ from the MKIV Series IV is in pieces and seems to have a Rapier type water pump, concave pistons, an alloy head with a tapered edge to the recessed valve seat area.
Other than that I am trying to find out how the cruciform chassis' are constructed and how the body sills and panels fit to it. On actual inspection (having dug my way past ferrous oxide) it doesn't seem that complicated, but there is nothing worse than a botched job so I would like to find tech spec type diagrams come pictures to be able to do the job properly.
Could anyone please point me in the right direction.
(Don't want much, does he!!!!)
Thanks in advance

Not MKs £10 fine to club funds.

Hi

Well the bad news first...neither engine is from a Sunbeam Alpine.

The engine numbers don't quite make sense, but I'll take an educated guess that your series V has a Hillman Hunter engine.
And your Series 1V a Sunbeam Rapier.

Maybe you could contact the Rootes Archive centre for more info.

Best of luck.

Firstly Thanks to Alvin the Alpine for a very quick responce.
I had a feeling that all was not right but I have an awfull lot of digging yet to do.
Any further assistance would be well appreciated.

Also I seem to have made an 'extreem' faux pas, not an auspicious start! SORRY SERIES IV and SERIES V.

Alvin is right that these engines came from 'Arrow' cars (Hunter, fastback Rapier etc). There's nothing wrong with them - the basic bits are the same as the SV Alpine. However, for the Alpine you have to find the correct front mount plate, dipstick, thermostat housing and cover, and water pump and manifolds. The Arrow engines were mounted tilted to the right rather than vertical - hence these differences. Parts from ANY Alpine series (or pre-Hunter Minx, Rapier etc) will fit.
The other pitfall is that the cheaper cars (Minx, Hunter DL) had engines with cast iron heads and the valves are in a different order so if you put an alloy head on one of these without changing the camshaft it won't run.
Some LG..... engines were iron head but as yours is running in your SV it must be OK!
One other point - I think that Arrow clutch driven plates have finer splines than earlier Alpines so check that your gearbox shaft fits your clutch.

I don't know where you can get easily drawings of the underframe, except perhaps at the Rootes Archive in Bucks. Best to find another car to look at. Do be aware that the sills and door lower edges are curved - lower halfway along than at the front and rear. Some non-Rootes sills don't have this curve. Make sure that the inner rear wheel arches are properly rebuilt and join to the sill structure or the car will sag.

Hi Chris,
Thanks very much for your help.
Any and all information regarding my cars I'm gratefull to recieve.
I bought both of them seperately as boxes of bits, and I am trying to piece together jigsaws without a picture as a guide. As no doubt you can imagine, vehicles that were stripped down 18-20 years ago will by now have odds and ends go missing, but nothing ventured I hope to resurect them both.... Oh what joy! At least it will keep me off the streets at night Very Happy
Paul
