I know that early Alpines and late Alpines have different bonnet hinges, but it's been suggested to me there were actually three different types of hinge used.

One design was for the early cars with the bonnet that didn't open as much, then a new design when the bonnets started opening further, and then a third design for Series V.

Does anybody know if this is correct? I believe that my Series III has Series V hinges - which interfere with the grille and mean that the bonnet doesn't align correctly.

Thanks all

The information you provide would lead one to guess that there are 3 sorts.
You are correct in saying that early (SI and II) hinges did not allow the bonnet to open fully. As you say that SV hinges interfere with the grill, you could deduce that SIII hinges must be different to both SII and SIV/V because SIII bonnets open wide and yet the SIII still has the SII grill.
However, the Parts List only lists 2 sorts, and as the later one supercedes the early design, it should be interchangeable. I know of a SII with later hinges that all works fine so it could be worth looking very closely to see why yours doesn't fit properly.

I have lately fitted new (reconditioned) hinges to my SIV & had a lot of trouble lining the bonnet up. I had to slot the holes in the bonnet side of the hinge to get a fit.The problem was that sometime in the past someone had fitted a new front pannel approx 5mm out of posinion!
