Exactly what I thought!! My mate who is an MOT tester, mentioned something about 'serious structural corrosion', the cheeky bar steward... _________________ Regards,

No sense of humour, these MOT testers!
Seriously though, I've brought cars back from a worse state than that, and look on the bright side, what a superb opportunity to practice your welding! _________________ SAOC 6543 |

That is one sick Tigger! Is it the 007 submarine version? It certainly looks as if it has spent some time under water!
I should have thought that a re-shell on a USA body would be the most practical and economic proposition. There was an unregistered USA Series IV for restoration in the Horn a couple of issues ago, which would suit your Tiger 1 (round corner bonnet/boot etc.) I don't know what the STOC thinks about Tiger/Alpines though, as the SAL body number (instead of JAL) would give the game away.

She's covered in waxoyl!! However, my girlfriends brother asked if I'd dragged her out of the canal when he first saw a picture of her!!

I think the Tiger community in general do tend to look down their noses at Tigers that have been re-shelled using Alpines.
It makes you wonder with the cars that are raced and rallied, when they do have a big smash/badly damaged shell, do they re-shell them or spend a fortune cutting everything away and replacing the metal?
Would they re-shell them using another Tiger? I very much doubt it.
If they used an Alpine shell, would these then become fakes? If you believe what various people say then the answer is yes, they do.
She's been in the family since 1972 so for sentimental reasons I wouldn't really want to 'shell her anyway, but, if that would be the only viable way to save her then it has to be considered!! I'll never sell her anyway!! _________________ Regards,

It's a bit like the woodman's axe really, it's had four handles and two heads but it's the same one!
Apart from a few things things like the battery box and stuff, the Tiger and Alpine shells are identical.
I for one wouldn't have any qualms in re-shelling a Tiger with an Alpine body, I would simply try and use the remaining good bits of the Tiger shell, plus its distinguishing and Tiger unique components in an effort to retain as much of its authenticity.
Better than breaking it for parts! _________________ SAOC 6543 |

I think there is nothing wrong in principle with a reshell, but I beg to disagree with you on them being identical. Until I bought the Tiger, I had thought the same, but there are many differences, and to properly modify the firewall and tunnel, inner wing reinforcement, relocate the pedal mountings, remove the battery box etc etc is not a trivial task. _________________ Tiger 260 Mk1

Perhaps I was making it sound a bit too easy for the home restorer, being in the body industry most of my life does that to you!
Pinpoint accurate Tiger body? Coming up, sir! _________________ SAOC 6543 |
