David J H Parrott

7.9.1944 – 5.5.2008

Editorial

Club members will be saddened to learn of the death of our President and Founder of the club, David Parrott, on 5th May after several months’ illness. We extend our deepest sympathies to his son Richard, his daughter Lisa and the whole family: our thoughts are very much with them at this difficult time.

Besides setting up the club in 1979, David was our first Chairman (for eleven years), first Editor and Parts Secretary: so the debt of gratitude we all owe him is beyond words. He was also involved in founding the Association of Rootes Car Clubs in 1982 and was its longest-serving Chairman and a founder Trustee of the Rootes Archive Centre Trust. It’s planned to hold a Memorial Service later this year to celebrate David’s life and many achievements, and we will of course make sure club members know details of the arrangements for this once they have been finalised by his family.

A full obituary will be published in the next issue of “Cut & Thrust,” which we are delaying so that it can properly commemorate him. One of the outstanding features of the SROC is its friendliness: it often feels more like an extended family than just a club. That is how David envisaged the club from the start, and it’s very much a reflection of his own generosity of character. So we very much hope that many of you who have known David over the years will want to share your memories and anecdotes of him with the rest of us, and we are setting aside extra space in the magazine to publish these.

Please send any such contributions to our Editor, Vernon Byrom, in writing or electronically as you prefer, BY 8 JUNE, PLEASE.
