This car is famous - in the SAOC.
When the club was formed, it was one of the few that could really be classed as 'concours'. In fact it did very well in concours competitions (all cars, not just Alpines) in 1978-80. I think it was well-placed in the T&CC event. It was owned by Mike Green, who also had one of the last Fastback Rapiers - in lime green, I recall.
Is it still good? Did you buy it from Mike?

Hello Chris...

Yes the car is in A1 condition. It is still in It's original condition. This car was featured in CHRIS McGOVEN'S book puplished in 1980 "The Classic Sunbeam". and has not been changed or been restored.

It is taking me many hours of work to clean the car as it has been stored since 1986 !

When Mike Green owned the car he changed as they did in the 1970s a few items....He put a wood gear knob on...changed the clock.....put on 1970s style number plates....he also put wire wheels on... although not Alpine wire Wheels !

Anyway the good news is that Mike kept all the bits he took off and kept them with the car. So i have put the small black auto gear knob back on...repaired the original clock for the car...put on 1960s style number plates. And best of all put the the original Steel wheels back on which are just like new.

I should have the car completed in about a month...I am waiting for some 6.00 x 13 whitewall cross-ply tyres to arrive from America....I have also had to replace the the battery...the car is still on positive electrics.

When finished the car will be to the original factory spec...It's still on leaded 4 star !

I hope this gives you a bit of an insight into this very special Alpine.

I have uploaded a picture of the interior of the car still in It's original condition before it has been cleaned .

In answer to your question....I did not buy the car off Mike in fact I have not even met him....but hope to in the near future.

Regards John.

Thanks for the update. If you meet Mike, do pass on my regards.

......but you will be very disappointed with crossply tyres - especially American ones. They did have radials in 1964 - they were a factory option so you can keep them!

If I could fit radials onto my 1926 Model T Ford, I would. But they don't make 125 x 21!

I was mistaken - what I recalled was that there was a tyre option which was a higher performance crossply - the Dunlop Road Speed RS5 5.90 x 13. You could order these in place of the 'normal' Dunlop 6.00 x 13 tyres which I guess would have been C41.

I don't think Rootes offered radials as options until the end of the 60s, although they were on sale long before. Even the Avenger came with D75 'Groundhogs' in 1970!

I still wouldn't fit crossplies though!

Good evening Chris,

I can't find those Dunlop RS5 5.90 x 13 for sale anywhere.

Plus I do want the car to have the 1" white-walls....I will be doing very few miles in the car so I think I'm going to go for 6.00 x13 cross-plys and keep the car to It's original spec.

Thanks for your help John.

Hello Everybody!

Well my name is Alex, I'm 19 and I live in Poole and work for Sunseeker International as an electrician.

I used to live in London and worked as a car mechanic.

Dare I say, unlike the majority of todays youth, I am well very worryingly obsessed with classic cars. I am very into my classic minis, and have a 1978 mini van that I am currently restoring, however the Sunbeam Alpine is the car I have dreamed to own for as long as I can remember. It's sleek styling and appearance just do it for me! Yes you could say it is my dream car...

Anyway, having looked around, I have found what most of you would call a rust bucket, on ebay.
I paid £500 for the car, here are a few details for you:

Year: 1963
Model: Alpine Sports GT
Engine cc: 1592
Colour: Red (now a faded to orange with rusty bits showing)
Reg: CMK 875A

I'm not entirely sure about the cars history, the (rather old looking) logbook shows 9 previous owners since 1978

The car is going to be having a full restoration, I want to make a really really good job of it. However I am going to try and show that it can be done on a budget. (mainly because im broke lol). It is going to need alot of welding, and I was a little concerned when the windscreen fell off when I tried to open the roof. However I was'nt expecting much for a car that has sat around doing nothing for 16 years! The previous owner told me the engine was last run 4 years ago. The mileage shows just over 27k, weather this is genuine or is actually meant to be 127k I don't know.

If any of you know of the car, I would be very interested in finding out it's history.

Hopefully I will be able to get to some meets and shows when she is looking nice.

Hi Alex.

Welcome to the club. I have acknowledge your membership form and registered CMK in your name. However what's the Alpine in your profile? Can't find that one in your name.

Thanks, the alpine is just a picture off google (it's actually just a model of an alpine) however it's what I want mine to look like after i've restored it.

I'm thinking of jet black, with spoked wire wheels, and white wall tyres.

The whole of the car is going to need restoring, I have started to have a look at it today, It is much worse than I expected however I am determined to have my dream car driving, I'm planning on roughly a 5 year restoration, however I'm sure you will see me at all the shows though.

I'll try and upload some horrific pictures of my car (or the lack of it with the rust!)
